Most of the election surveys are misleading in India for the following reasons. 1).India is the most diverse country in the world . The diversity is at every level in terms of caste , creed , class , language and context . It is indeed difficult to get a sample size representative of such bewildering diversity .2) In every election multiple narratives are at work , national , state and local dynamics . Hence not easy to capture these multiple narrative 3).It matters who ask.the survey questions ,how and when . Because Indian voters often say one thing and vote exactly opposit ..Because people often are scared to openly tell their preference . 
But most often surveys are also cooked largely based on guess-work based on biases rather than real detailed surveys . Exit polls can be more indicative of the trend
