Celebrating 25 years of Making a Difference. NCAS


Dear friends of NCAS.
National Centre for Advocacy Studies(NCAS )Completed 25 years of institutional leadership in people centred advocacy for public policy, social accountability and participatory governance and humans rights of marginalized people in India and internationally.
NCAS is a unique memberships based national resource centre and a collective launched by leading civil society organization and movement, including SEWA, Dalits and adivasi rights organization, fisher folk movements and women's movement.
It was initiated and led by Ela Bhat, Justice PN Bhagwatihi, Vijay Tendulkar, Madhu Sudan Mistry, Vivek Pandit, Martin Macwan and leaders included Aruna Roy, PV Rajgopal, Jagadand, Mari Thekkekkara, Pravin Mahajan, Anil Singh, Vasudha Dagamvar Enakshi Ganguly, Manjula PradeepBimla ChandrasekarAasha Ramesh, Sathybabu Bose, Bhawarsingh, Subhash Medhapurkar, Milind Kokje and leading civil society leaders of India. Directors /coordinators included Joseantony Joseph., Prof Nirmal Pandit, Dr. Gnana Prakash, Amitabh Behar, Shehjo Singh, Vijaya PatnekarDhananjay Kakade and Amit Narkar I had the privilege to lead and establish NCAS as a premiere national and international organization for more than ten years and was an active part of the organization from its inception.
I will be taking once again an active leadership role in celebrating and launching new national initiatives at 25 years of NCAS (www.ncsindia.org)
There are lots to celebrate. Here are eleven key highlight.
1) NCAS coordinated the pioneering India international advocacy fellowship programme in Partnership with Advocacy Institute, Washington DC till 1997,
2) played a very crucial national and international institutional leadership role in promoting and supporting people centred advocacy movement and public policy initiatives
3) We have provided advocacy capacity development to more than 15000 civil society leaders /activists and institutions across India and in more than thirty countries in the world.
4)) Our well known public policy advocacy support included Right to Information, Right to Education, Laws on land acquisition and forest rights.
5) NCAS helped to establish Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability, Social Watch India, Wada Na Thodo Abhiyan and was a founding member of many global networks, including international social watch, global trade justice campaign and Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) and ESC rights global networks,
6) NCAS was a part of two UN initiative including Global Massive Efforts campaign on TB and HIV and advocacy training at the UN staff college, Turin.
7)) NCAS was in the forefront of Human Rights based approach to Development initiative at the national and international level in the 1990s.
8) NCAS initiated the first civil society parliament research programs and published a regular periodic journal called Parliament Digest.
9)NCAS launched the first civil society Budget Analysis and Accountability network in India.
10) NCAS Advocacy Internship was the first program of its kind and NCAS/CBGA interns are leaders in civil society, academia, media, social movements and international organizations
11) NCAS closely worked with a supported MKSS, Ekta Parishad and National Campaign for Dalit Rigts and Fisher Folks Movements.
We have decided to celebrate 25 years of NCAS and organize series of events across India and internationally. We need active support and participation of all Ncas Alumni Connect, NCAS inters and friends.
We will be also launching three new initiatives as a part of our silver Jubilee Year .
a).National policy and advocacy consortium ; a national alliance of advocacy, public policy and governance institutions across India
b) Launching the first of its kind a year long Postgraduate Diploma in Public policy and governance, Postgraduate Diploma in public policy and sustainable development. These courses will be held at NCAS pune campus and five of our consortium campus across India.
c) We will be launching new capacity development and research initiatives in the area of education, health, food rights. SDGs governance.

All of us associated with NCAS as members, staff, interns and participants of our programs can be proud of the fact we together made a difference in our country and beyond.
Let us work together again to build a new dream for India and NCAS in the next 25 years.
